Never thought it would happen! Leonardo DiCaprio finally poses for a fan photo on the set of ‘Wolf of Wall Street’!

When I saw this pic of Leonardo DiCaprio with one of Twitter followers, @beastof51, it was a shock! That’s not to say Leo probably isn’t a really nice guy, but on the set of his new movie, The Wolf of Wall Street, he’s been anything but generous to fans.

The Martin Scorsese flick, based on the book of the same name, has only been filming in New York City for a few days but already it’s becoming legendary for the secrecy surrounding the set and actors.

With a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, Kyle Chandler and many others, it’s no surprise WOWS was one of the most highly anticipated projects shooting in NYC this year. For weeks fans have been searching for clues about where the movie would be shooting, and now that it is, they are having a hard time getting near it.

Flocks of fans (and paparazzi) have visited the movie’s set each day, but instead of being able to quietly watch from the sidelines or maybe even get lucky enough to take a photo with one of the movie’s stars, they’re being shooed away and ignored. Leo and Matthew have even been blocked by umbrellas and multiple security guards as they walk back and forth from their trailers to the set.

On Saturday, once of our contributors, Denise,  watched a walking scene with Leo and a bunch of extras filming near Wall Street but was only able to take a couple of photos before a Production Assistant blocked her (literally). One of our Twitter followers, @Vivski_L, also spotted Leo leaving his trailer yesterday – but instead of waving hello to waiting fans, he covered his entire head with a semi-closed umbrella.

I know actors aren’t obligated to talk to fans, and I am sure getting followed around by paps gets old at some point, but I’ve never seen a set so shrouded in secrecy, and I’ve never seen anyone actually close an umbrella over their head!

Based on the photos from Denise and @ashtv43 it looks like Matthew is a bit more friendly, though we’ve heard he hasn’t been big on stopping for fans either.

If you check out the Wolf of Wall Street set (you can find their filming locations in our Daily Filming Locations), let me know how your experience was, good or bad, at olv@onlocationvacations.com!

  1. Pardon me, but i saw a video of Leo on the first day of filming when he gets out of the bus, where he takes a picture with a fan. So this wasn’t the first time he took a picture with a fan. The umbrella thing is get hide from paparazzi, not fans. There is a difference in that.

    • I understand and I an sure I am going to take plenty of heat for this and maybe it wasn’t the first one but it one of a VERY few…I know he’s not into paparazzi but like I said in the story…holding the umbrella closed like that in front of him is a little extreme…it makes me think it might have something to do with what they are shooting, maybe they are trying to hide how he is made up or something too…I don’t know but I have covered hundreds of sets and the whole operation of this, not just how Leo is acting, is a little weird…that’s all I’m saying…

  2. There’s definitely a difference with him in meeting fans and when he’s being bugged by paps and autograph hounds. I’ve met him a few times without those people around and he’s been very nice.

  3. Agree with Kiki’s comments, plus, I’ve been on two Leo movie sets, and when filming is over I’ve seen him take pix with many fans.

Also, I know someone who was on the Django set, and Tarantino used the umbrella bit there when ever he had Jamie or Leo in costume.

As others have said above, it is all a matter of timing, when Leo is in costume , he’s there to work not pose for paps or fans.

After work he’s more than willing

Infact read the website below where the guy talks about Leo signing autographs for several fans ,etc

  4. Mr. DiCaprio is a fantastic actor but is pretty known here in LA as not being very fan friendly. That is a very, very lucky girl. He will usually sign at a movie premiere (sometimes not even then), but I have never witnessed him stopping to take a photo.

Also, it is completely legal to photograph if you are on a public street. I don’t know why this security / rent a cop / whatever on set forgot those rules. Good on you for posting the pictures of him looking like such an idiot.

  5. I think fans should also accept the working routine of an actor. Some need the time to concentrate on the scene their about to do or just would like to stay in character. It´s their working space and everybody needs to do whats good for them. It doesn´t mean they don´t appreciate their fans.

  6. Below is Leo with fans (some pics i collected just now, and i’m sure that’s not even all there is.) Some from longer time ago and some very recent:

Alex i couldn’t agree with you more. What is being not fan-friendly? I’ve never seen or heard him being rude in any way. He never yells to a fan, he never pushes their camera way. He smiled i heard from a girl who was there, constantly when taking pictures and signing for fans. and i may not go to all of those sets and events like some of you but i am a longtime “follower” of Leo and his work, and therefor i have seen zillions of video’s during premieres where he almost always signs for as many fans as possible. I just know, that he like to be by himself, and he doesn’t mind an encounter with fans at all, he just “works” better one on one. He doesn’t like to be mobbed (who does)? 😉 Just thought this should be said, too.

  7. Christine, i wasn’t meaning to give you heat. 😀 I don’t think anyone does, but ofcourse you can expect some people having way different experiences with him, and want to share that as well. Thank you for those pictures, Missy! Do you know who the girl in the hospital with Leo is, and how she met him? He looks so sweet with her! <3

  8. ^ Yeah it’s a girl he visited for Make A Wish Foundation. She got handicapped after a sportgame went horribly wrong, and he visited her (he often does, and he is always cuddly and kissing them and bringing them presents and such). Terrific guy!

  9. That’s the thing, many people don’t know that about him as he never flaunts it. Yet they have this opinion about him (negatively). ;( everyone can have a day (especially since for him it’s just work) where they don’t feel up to taken pictures or are tired and wanna spend time by themselves, doesn’t mean he is fan-unfriendly.

  10. Guys I am only talking about this particular movie like I said in the very first line I am Sure he is a nice guy and it’s not just him everyone on this movie is acting like this if you read the story I’m talking about the pas mm everyone not just Leo.

I would love to see more pics or vids of him with fans on this movie so if you have them or have a great encounter with him let me know and I’ll post that too I’m just trying to explain that this set is being run very differently than most movies that are shot on the streets of Manhattan…

  11. I work very close to where they were filming today and i was so excited to get a chance to get a picture of him, even from across the street. The security guards at the hotel set up a barracade in the front for the fans to gather, and then after we waited and waited they told us he already left and smiled as if they were happy we got tricked. I’ve never met Leo 🙁 so I don’t know if it is him or the movie’s producers who are all about the secrecy, but it made my first experience very upsetting.

  12. That was a very lucky girl to get a pic. I have had no luck with getting a pic with him or Matt on set, not even first thing in the morning. And sometimes they don’t even acknowledge the fans waiting while walking to or from their trailer.

  13. Forgot to mention that at the shoot near the Rockerfeller Center, Leo actually got in the car just to cross the street from the trailer to the set and the car drove him into a garage and then a door came down blocking him from public view before he got out. Seems a bit extreme to me!

  14. On the day the picture with the fan above was taken, he took pics with as many fans as possible. (read that on twitter). All while keeping a smile on his face. So it’s not that strange the other day he just wants to focus on his work, and after go back to his hotel to be by himself. I always admire actors, cause i wouldn’t be able to work, focus on my lines and all if loads of paparazzi and fans are waiting for me, taking pics and such. I would get nervous. Leo is known to get nervous of that too. I don’t think it often has to do alot with him not be willing to. And @ Man In Black, if they didn’t block him from public view he would be immidiately mobbed by paps and fans. Okay they might be about to film an important scene where they don’t want onlookers. I just don’t get how some people can get upset, as they are just working there, after all. It’s nothing personal when they want their privacy/space after they finish. And i definitely would not let their bodyguards/security upset me, cause they are known to be lots worse than the celebrities themselves. While the celeb in question is friendly.

  15. Hii guys. I just wanted to say that i was there this day as well. And i didn’t get my picture taken with Leo (or even a picture of him) as it was a madhouse! I think dailymail has posted a story about it too, so bad it was. Everyone was pulling him, pushing, and i even got run over by the photographers when they tried to snap a picture of Leo! It wasn’t fun, well i was excited to see Leo ofcourse. But i guess what i try to say is, some just ruin it for the others to get the chance to meet him. Fans just shoved camera’s in his face without even asking for a photo, while he was walking! It was very rude and agressive. But i have nothing bad to say about Leo’s attitude. I think he kept himself very well together, he kept on smiling, kept posing for pictures and then walked away. He kept very patient, more than i could have i am sure. So nice to see one of the pictures he took with fans, he is even more handsome in person!

  16. I really hope to see more pics soon! On Tumblr and Twitter there are loads of people saying they saw Leo today on set, and he waved at them! Arghh wish i didn’t live so far away. ;(
