Geeks didn’t have to wait for Comic-Com to get their Joss Whedon fix this year.
The director, along with cast members Brian McElhaney, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz, Clark Gregg, Emma Bates, Spencer Treat Clark, Joshua Zar, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion, Tom Lenk, Brian McElhaney, and Nick Kocher, brought their new film, Much Ado About Nothing to SXSW last weekend.
The movie is a modern take on Shakespeare’s play, though Whedon’s adaptation retains the Bard’s original language, which was shot in Whedon’s L.A. home in less than two weeks last year. “Doing work in that compressed, let’s-put-on-a-show hothouse was … therapeutic,” Whedon said.
Alexis Denisof agreed that the tight circumstances were what made the experience worthwhile. “We’re doing it in a couple of weeks,” he said. “For sure, it was a labor of love and there was a lot of love, but there was also a lot of labor. That was one of the fun things about it.”
Nathan Fillion had another take on the experience. “Intimidating, terrifying, frightening. I peed a little,” he told the SXSW crowd of his nerves.
“I peed a lot,” added star Clark Gregg, who plays Leonato.
Lionsgate is set to release Much Ado About Nothing on June 7.
