‘Godzilla’ filming begins on Vancouver Island in British Columbia

According to Warner Brothers, principal photography on Godzilla officially began yesterday around Vancouver.

Gareth Edwards is directing the film, which is going by the working title Nautilus, from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston (who is wrapping up the final week of production on Breaking Bad this week).

According to one of our tipsters, @lemon_buzz, Godzilla’s first 3 weeks of production will be spent on Vancouver Island, mostly in downtown Victoria.

According to Canada.com, Island filming will first take place on Old Victoria Road in the city of Nanaimo, then in Ladysmith, and Shawnigan Lake.

Details surrounding the film have been scarce but Elizabeth Olsen did recently discuss the project saying, “It’s definitely not lighthearted, it’s kind of going back to its roots of the original Japanese film.”

  1. Godzilla is not filming in Victoria, it is filming mainly in Nanaimo. Whoever said it will be in downtown Victoria probably got confused by the “Old Victoria Road” connection.

  2. I, am personally happy that “shooting”, has begun on the new Godzilla movie. Really hyped about the director, cast, and the kaiju. I have personally met Watanabe-San in Rosemont IL. at the G-Fest convention. We were in a fan video, I as an extra,a solider(Kaiju), he as a kaiju. He was great as a guest and and wonderful to the fan.
The catch phrase of,”Grounded in Reality”, may bring back memories of “Godzilla 98”. I saw both “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, and “The Giant Behemoth”,who were both closer to
reality than “Godzilla”,with the “Beast” closer than both “Godzilla”,and “Behemoth”. All three
were great movies from the 50’s, with “Godzilla “to become a classic. I just wish I could be an extra and get squish by the big “G”.

  3. This is an addendum,to my first comment. The actor I was speaking of is not Mr. Ken Watanabe
of “Batman”, or “The Last Samurai”,but Mr. Hiroyuki Watanabe.

  4. Matthew Brodericks Godzilla wasn’t good enough I guess . Hope this doesnt start and endless series of Godzilla repro’s . Hope this time Big G wins . Is innovation just on TV , Fringe , Breaking Bad , Walking Dead ? C’mon Hollywood , stop sitting on your laurels ( and Hardys) and do something GREAT !
