Robert Downey Jr. will keep fighting alongside his buddies from Avengers, at least for the next two movies and, who knows, maybe we will also get to see the hero in another installment of Iron Man.
Marvel Studios recently announced that they have signed a contract with Robert Downey Jr. that will see the return of the “billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark and his superheroic alter ego Iron Man for two more movies”.
The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3 will be the fifth and sixth times Downey Jr. suits up as Iron Man on the big screen. Readers might remember that the Iron Man actor’s contract with Marvel ended with the previous Iron Man, however after the huge success of Iron Man 3, which has recently crossed the $1.2 billion mark worldwide, it can come as no surprise that the company was quick to renew his contract.
Avengers director Joss Whedon stated earlier that he couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role of Iron Man. ”He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond,” Whedon stated when asked about the future of Avengers if Downey Jr. didn’t sign a new contract.
While details on the new contract have been sparse, Downey did tell GQ in April that he cashed in $50 million for the first Avengers movie.
The Avengers 2, which hits theaters on May 1, 2015, is slated to begin production in March at Pinewood-Shepperton in Buckinghamshire, UK.
This will be the fourth Marvel movie filmed at the studio after Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy which is filming there this summer. In contrast, The Avengers was filmed at various locations throughout the U.S. including Albuquerque, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and New York City.
