On Tuesday dozens of extras gathered outside the courthouse on Centre Street in Manhattan to film a protest scene for Law and Order: SVU ripped straight from the headlines.

In the episode, which will air in October, guest star Cybill Shepherd plays a woman loosely based on Florida gunman George Zimmerman who has killed a black teen named Mehcad.

During Tuesday’s shoot Shepard and her lawyer, played by Jeffrey Tambor, are met by a large crowd of protestors – a scene reminiscent of the recent Trayvon Martin protests that have taken place around the country – as they try to leave the court yet.

Yesterday the show’s Executive Producer Warren Leight told EW, “Tambor is a defense attorney representing a very high-profile celebrity woman chef who thought she was being pursued by a rapist and turned around it was a teenager. And she shot him. There’s a lot of stop and frisk elements to that as well.”

Leight also promised they won’t be avoid the big questions surrounding the controversial case in the episode. “Is racial profiling justifiable? Can self-defense involve racial profiling? We’re diving right into that,” he said. “Can that happen in New York? Absolutely.”

Check a few photos from the shoot below, thanks to OLV Twitter follower, @Sapphire902, and let us know what you think of SVU borrowing from such a high profile case for the episode in the comments below.

  1. Interesting. Will the show being doing an episode “loosely based” on the cold-blooded murder of the white Australian guy by three black thugs in Oklahoma? Sick of the racial bias.

  2. Brooke,

No they absolutely will not, the liberal media in this country never, ever tackle black vs. white crime incidents, ever, much less acknowledge they occur.
And what about the woman in the stroller who’s child was gunned down by a black man somewhere down south or the scary school bus video of the white kid savagely beaten by several black thugs in Florida??? bet you never saw that one and never will unless you search for it.
