The sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which was suppose to start filming in Toronto this month, has been delayed indefinitely.
“Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of ‘City of Ashes’ was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place,” executive producer Martin Moszkowicz said. “‘The Mortal Instruments’ series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a bestselling book series. While taking Cassandra Clare’s vision to the screen, we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.”
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was declared a flop after it opened on Aug. 23 and grossed only $28 million in North America. It also received scathing reviews with one critic calling it a “desperate Twilight wannabe”.
Please change your mind about delaying the 2nd film.
Critics don’t know what they’re talking about, the movie was great, way better than twilight
I loved the movie! I really hope they make the second one!! I had not heard of the book series before the movie, the movie was so great that it made me read the book series.
My family and I really enjoyed the movie and hoping the sequel continues. I think the timing was off with back to school and end of summer events. I feel a November debut would be better.
It couldn’t compete with competition that had lower budgets and lower theatre releases and were in their 2nd and 3rd weeks of release. How can it compete against the big movies opening in November?
I think they could compete if (1) the critics weren’t so harsh, (2) the right release date and I think there needs to be way more advertising because I never even saw a trailer for the first one, I only saw the trailer on you tube…
The critics were harsh because the movie was bad. Beautiful Creatures & ALL Twilight movies had better ratings than TMI. Warm Bodies & Hunger Games had positive ratings as well.
Also, it’s marketing was unprecedented – it had one of the largest marketing campaigns in the history of movie making. What do I mean by this? Most movies never exceed 50% of the production budget for marketing. ie: for a movie like Green Lantern that cost 200 million to make, their marketing budget was 100 million (as confirmed by the studio).
For TMI their marketing budget, as Kulzer, Constantin’s co-president, confirmed was 60 million. So TMI had a marketing budget 100% of the production budget. That’s basically unheard of.
It would have made even less money without their huge marketing, but then again, costs would be down, so it’s a trade off.
And there’s no chance to compete whatsoever against any of the popular movie opening dates.
The Movie defiantly wasn’t bad.
The critics kept on comparing it to Harry potter and twilight when the mortal instruments is nothing like them.
Films shouldn’t be compared like that, mortal instruments was unique it its own way, for example how on earth is it like twilight?
Twilight was about romance and that’s is, all it was was a boy likes girl story with vampires added in, take away the romance you have nothing left of this film however in mortal instruments take away the romance you still have a strong evil vs good story line.
Also just because it didn’t make it big doesn’t mean its a bad movie, it may not be your cup of tea but it doesn’t make it bad, I know lots of movies that weren’t huge that are really good movies to watch.
Also most fans or people that have seen this film from what I’ve heard have liked it, only the critics let it down, they need to stop comparing it to Twilight and Harry potter and actually say something about the story line.
From reviews all I’ve heard is something to do with Harry potter or twilight and box office results, no ones mentioned the amazing special effects or the actual plot.
The second film will make sure they add more depth to the film and other characters..
I can’t wait for the second film đŸ™‚
