It’s been three weeks since the finale of Breaking Bad and fans are still talking about it. But soon they’ll have a new series to obsess over – the show’s spin off, tentatively titled Better Call Saul.
A few weeks ago producers confirmed they were moving forward with the series that will be a Breaking Bad prequel focusing on Saul Goodman, Walt’s lawyer with questionable morals played Bob Odenkirk.
Though the show is a go there was still some question about where it would be filmed. Folks in Albuquerque, who are still benefiting from Breaking Bad’s popularity, have hoped it would return to New Mexico. Though, as of last week Albuquerque Studios, where Bad was shot, still hadn’t been approached about the project.
But, according to Breaking Bad executive producer Vince Gilligan, they have nothing to worry about. In a new interview with THR the showrunner said that they loved the world of Breaking Bad so much they have decided to film the series in Albuquerque with much of the same crew.
Let’s shoot it in Albuquerque, let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.
Gilligan also confessed he hopes Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) will make appearances in Saul. “Personally, I’d have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then,” he said.
Better Call Saul is expected to debut on AMC next summer which means pre-production will likely be underway by the end of the year. One of the many challenges of the new show will be Bob Odenkirk’s busy schedule. After the success of Breaking Bad Odenkirk has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors and has already signed on Fargo, a 10-episode limited series adaptation of the Coen Brothers’ film set to air on FX next year.
Fargo begins filming in Calgary in November.
