Considering it’s the biggest shopping day of the year, it only seems right to pay homage to a movie that was set entirely in a mall.
Earlier this week I caught Mallrats on TV for the first time in ages, which got me wondering where Kevin Smith filmed the movie, especially since his mall looked a lot nicer than the one I hung out in during the 90s.
Come to find out, Mallrats was filmed in the Eden Prairie Center Mall, located at 8251 Flying Cloud Dr in Eden Prairie, Minnesota in 1995.
Reportedly, Smith wanted to film the movie at the Seaview Square Mall in his home state of New Jersey but was forced to choose Minnesota instead due to lower production costs.
Of course, the mall looks much different today than it did 20 years ago. It went through a major renovation and expansion back in 2001 and is currently anchored by Target, Sears, Von Maur, J.C. Penney, and an 18-screen AMC movie theater.
Mallrats follows high school friends T.S. and Brodie, who are both dumped by their girlfriends on the same day. They head to the mall where they meet up with Jay and Silent Bob and together they concoct a plan to win the girls back while wreaking havoc on the mall.
You can rent Mallrats right now on Amazon Instant Video.
So funny because when I saw it earlier this week, too, I also went online to find the mall where it was filmed! Hahaha
