A new independent film is shining a new spotlight on Alex Haley’s 1977 miniseries Roots.
Showing Roots is set in a small Southern town in 1977, where two women – Violet (Maggie Grace) and Pearl (Uzo Aduba) – who are working in a local beauty shop see the town’s balance turned upside down after the miniseries airs and decide to integrate their community, to the dismay of those around them.
Adam Brody also stars as Bud, an engineer who comes to town to fix a local bridge and Elizabeth McGovern will play Shirley, the beauty shop’s owner. Cicely Tyson, who appeared in the original Roots miniseries, will play Pearl’s grandmother, Hattie.
The movie has just started filming in the Baton Rouge area, where “Roots” production signs have been spotted around town. Additional filming is taking place in nearby Plaquemine and Donaldsonville, too.
