‘Star Wars’ fans: Can’t go to Skywalker Ranch? Here’s the next best thing

George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, CA is at the top of every Star Wars fan’s fantasy trip list. Who wouldn’t want to hang out on a property that has a library under a stained-glass dome, a 300-seat theater, its own fire station, Lake Ewok and a swimming pool that is rumored to resemble R2-D2? But, there’s one catch, it’s nearly impossible to get an invite to the private property. It has even been said that Lucas turned down a request from then President Reagan to tour the grounds.

So, what’s the next best thing? A visit to the Letterman Digital Arts Center at the Presidio Trust in San Francisco, home to Lucasfilm Ltd., Industrial Light and Magic, LucasArts and the George Lucas Educational Foundation. These buildings aren’t open to the public either, but fans are welcome to visit the lobby of Building B to see some of the Star Wars memorabilia on display, tour the gardens or take photos with their famous Yoda statue.
