Last night, New York City’s Ziegfeld Theatre played its final movie with the 10:00 p.m. screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
New Yorkers waited in long lines Thursday night to say goodbye to the legendary theater, which opened in 1969 and quickly became the go to location for Hollywood premieres in NYC.
The premieres of the Transformers movies, the Divergent series, The Amazing Spider-Man movies, The Fault in Our Stars and World War Z are just a few that have taken place at the Ziegfeld.
In anticipation of the Ziegfeld’s closure, studios have moved many of their more recent premieres to the ACM multiplex in Lincoln Square, the ACM Empire in Midtown and the theater at MOMA recently.
The Ziegfeld may continue its relationship with Hollywood in the coming years as it is expected to be transformed into an upscale event space, that sounds perfect for after parties, fund raisers and other celebrity events.
