With “The BFG” in theaters this summer, VisitBritain launched a new tourism campaign to promote the movie’s filming locations internationally. The film, based on the book by author Roald Dahl and directed by Steven Spielberg, was shot at various locations across Britain including Blenheim Palace, London, the Isle of Skye and Bamburgh beach in Northumberland.

The classic children’s tale follows ten-year-old Sophie as she meets the Big Friendly Giant and, though she is scared at first, she soon realizes the giant is actually quite charming.

VisitBritain’s “Where Giant Dreams come to Life” campaign is a six-week digital and social media initiative highlighting “magical, mysterious and dreamlike moments” that can only be experienced by paying a visit to Britain’s “giant landmarks” like the Angel of the North, Big Ben, the Isle of Skye and the lions in Trafalgar Square.

These locations, among others, will be promoted across VisitBritain’s online and social media channels using the hastag #OMGB, modified to now mean Oh My GIANT Britain. The campaign will bring readers to visitbritain.com/thebfg, where they will find information about the 100th anniversary of Dahl, which is being celebrated throughout the year, and London’s “BFG” Dream Jar Trail, taking place through August 31, in addition to the movie’s locations.

The magical giant dream jars, that “belong to Big Friendly Giant who mislaid them during his night-time wanderings” will be found throughout the streets of London. Each giant jar will contain the dreams of celebrities, like Steven Spielberg and “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams, and will have a unique design. When the exhibit ends, the jars will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to Save the Children and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

Anyone who visits the “BFG” website from the United States, France, Canada, Russia or Australia can also enter a sweepstakes for the opportunity to win a family vacation to Britain, including two days in London with accommodations at the Athenaeum Hotel & Residences, tickets to The Shard for a giant’s view of the city and tickets to see Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” on stage. The winner will also travel to Dahl’s hometown of Cardiff for the City of the Unexpected celebration.

VisitBritain Chief Executive Sally Balcombe shared her excitement about the campaign in a press release, saying, “Our collaboration with Disney on ‘The BFG’ is a fantastic opportunity to promote to a global audience of millions an unexpected side of amazing, family-friendly moments that can only be experienced in Britain. By inspiring people to come and experience the best of ‘GIANT’ Britain we can drive growth from tourism and its economic benefits across all our nations and regions.”

The campaign will run through the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth on September 13.
