If you were a fan of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 70s, or watched it in reruns as a kid like I did, you’ll likely recognize this gorgeous home, located 2104 Kenwood Pkwy, Minneapolis, MN.
The Victorian home in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis served as the exterior of Mary’s apartment and was featured in the very first shot of the series’ pilot episode.Minneapolis isn’t an obvious choice for a sitcom but the producers wanted a break from New York or Los Angeles, where most TV series were set.
Of course, all of the interior shots of Mary’s apartment were filmed on a soundstage, in fact the third floor of the house wasn’t even finished off at the time the show was on the air.
If you’ve ever dreamed of living in that historic 9,500-square-foot home, this could be your chance – well, if you can afford it. Currently, the home is for sale for $1,695,000. According to Zillow, it features “vintage charm combined w/modern applications.” It also boasts a “gourmet center island kitchen with high end stainless and integrated appliances that opens to family room, ornate millwork, bayed rooms and leaded glass transom accents throughout, a third level family room and three car garage.” Built in 1892, the home has seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, nanny quarters, a sauna, a weight room and a three-car garage.
If that price tag is a bit out of your price range, you can still take a stroll by the private residence in this beautiful neighborhood, just a block or so from the lake, it is perfect for a walk on nice day!
Anther must see for fans of The Mary Tyler Moore Show is the statue of Mary, which now stands in the Minneapolis visitor center. We had a little trouble finding it during our last trip to Minneapolis, but it was so worth it when we did.
