Visit the restaurant from ‘You’ve Got Mail’ in New York

One of the most interesting things to do in New York is to visit places that featured in movies filmed in the city. One film that got famous for being shot almost entirely in the Upper West Side is You’ve Got Mail (1998), with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Probably one of the most memorable scenes of the movie is when Tom Hanks’ character finds out that the woman with whom he’s been exchanging e-mails is Meg Ryan’s character, his business nemesis. Instead of revealing himself to her, he lets her think she’s been stood up. That whole scene was shot at Cafe Lalo, at 201 West 83rd Street:

They have some photos of the movie displayed at the door, so guests can recall where those characters sat. The menu offers a wide range of options, from just coffee and some snacks to full meals. It is a bit smaller than it looks like in the movie, but the atmosphere is nice.

Pro tip: If you stop by, try the pastries and the quiches – they are delicious.
