‘The Help’ will be filmed in Greenwood, Mississippi this summer

76th Annual Drama League Awards Ceremony And Luncheon

The big screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel, The Help, set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s, will begin filming in July.

The story explores how the unspoken code of behavior governing Southern households is shattered when an aspiring writer named Skeeter interviews a maid who speaks openly about her life. So far, Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard have signed on for the lead roles.

Though the movie is set in Jackson, most of the shoot will take place in Greenwood, a city in the Mississippi Delta region mostly known for cotton fields and blues music. Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams said filming in her city will take place around Baptist Town, at local plantations and antebellum homes.

  1. Have not read your book, nor looked into the details of the movie. They did,nt film in Jackson because it might create a racial problem. I grew up in a middle class family . At one time I remember having a black helper. Last I saw we hugged & I told her how much I loved her. Don.t talk your Hollywood, Liberal racial crap ! There might have been an occasional Ass in thr south , that does not apply to all of us. Where is the movie about the ” Parker Familt” from Marks Ms. They were interviewed , the movie never came out, There is pure evil in every race. Why don.t you people tell the truth?

  2. If someone hasn’t read “THe Help” ..they have no clue what is going on…it doesn’t try to make anyone look bad…it is a good book. I am from MS & had a black maid part of time when growing up & she was part of our family & we loved her dearly! She loved us! From what I understand, it isn’t all being filmed in Jackson due to the growth of the city & Greenwood has more places that had the setting that was needed…it had nothing to do with racial problems. Where did that come from?Yes there were people that thought they were better than the blacks but not true for everyone…but then again there are white people & black people that think they are better then others & I think that will go on til the end of time!

  4. You are right sandy, my grandmother for was a maid for years and the family she worked for love her as much as her own family did , there was not a birthday, christmas, mother day or or any holiday that came up that didnot show there love for her in fact when she pasted alway 17 year ago the white families told my family that would take care of everything and that did and was not because we did not have insurance to take care of her funeral because we did, they just wanted to take care like she did them and to show us that she was not just a maid that she was part of there family as well, at the funeral they cried more than we did., and right to this day they put a dozen roses on her grave and we all still keep in touch with each other like family because my grandmother raised us up with the family she worked for and she told them as well as her own grandchildren we all bleed the same blood red, love and respected each no matter what, because GOD dont see COLOR.

  5. I am from Mississippi as well, it is true there are a few folks that have a corncob stuck where the sun don’t shine, but for the most part it seems we all pretty much get along. I have Black friends, Black Family and Black friends that are close like family. I married a Peurto Rican Woman (Very Lovely, and Awesome Cook i might add 🙂 ) She has black children, her family is mixed, mine is mixed……who cares?…….I kiss her good morning, good night and sometimes just for the hell of it, her lips are no different than anyone else’s (except a little sweeter). I do understand why folks would be a little upset at the filming of any movie in Mississippi, Every time they do it, it’s about hate crimes, racism, and extreme prejudice. The only movie i can recall that didn’t have some form of racism that was partially filmed in Mississippi was Stone Cold (Bay St Louis, Ms.)….(I don’t remember much about Biloxi Blues, but i think it referenced racism). And most of you remember all the controversy Mississippi Burning stirred up. hell, even “In the Heat of the Night” (TV SHOW) referenced racism and hate. Every time they make a movie about Mississippi it’s this way, Just once I would love to see them make a movie that actually reflects truth and the struggle, and the change that this state has under went. Mississippi is my home, No place on Earth like it, Hot Summers, the mild winters, Fishing, Grillin’, hunting, swimming, and of course, Sweet Taters and Smith County Watermelons………(I live in Pittsburgh now, Ya’ll be thankful, their watermelons look like cantaloupes up here–sad but true, and they still cost $4 to 5.00, they ain’t got no louisianna hot sauce, no fresh greens, and don’t ask for a glass of sweet tea, they think you nuts–literally, a waitress ask me what it was)
