As we’ve mentioned, George Clooney is set to star in and direct The Ides of March, based on the play Farragut North by Beau Williamson, which is loosely based on the 2004 presidential campaign. But, until last week, the movie was still in flux with no distribution and no release date.
Last week there was good news though as it was announced the movie will be released in a limited theatrical run in December 2011 with a wide release in February 2012 (sounds like George is fishing for another Oscar). And, more importantly, Sony also announced they bought the North American distribution rights to the film.
So far, its been confirmed that Ryan Gosling will play Stephen Meyers in the film, the young campaign mastermind for Governor Morris (George Clooney) who is campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination while Paul Giamatti will play the rival Democratic candidate’s campaign manager. Marisa Tomei has joined the cast as a New York Times reporter and Evan Rachel Wood will play an intern who Ryan Gosling’s character hooks up with.
The movie is expected to start shooting in Detroit and Ohio (likely near Cleveland) in February. This won’t be George’s first time working in Michigan, last year he filmed several scenes for Up In The Air in the Detroit Metro Airport.
