Volkswagen tried to top last year’s “The Force” Super Bowl commercial with the “The Bark Side” and “The Dog Strikes Back”, featuring a 3 year-old Saint Bernard-Australian shepherd mix named Bolt.
In the commercial, Bolt starts out overweight and is frustrated because he can’t fit through his doggy door which would allow him to chase the red VW Beetle that keeps driving by. Realizing he’s let himself go, Bolt decides to get into shape by refusing treats, running up and down the stairs, hitting the treadmill and swimming laps.
The most amazing aspect of the ad is that instead of using two dogs for the commercial, (one fat, one not), Deutsch LA (the agency that created the commercial), outfitted Bolt with a custom-made furry fat suit.
Bolt, who lives with his trainer, Gary Mui, in Santa Clarita, CA worked for months to get every expression just right for the VW ad.
The commercial, including the swimming scenes and chasing scenes, was shot in the Chapman Woods section of Pasadena, CA in early January. Chapman Woods is located in the Southeast corner of Pasadena with N-Del Mar, S-Huntington, E-Rosemead, W-Edison Power Lines providing its borders.
Do you think Bolt and the barking dogs were better than last year’s little Darth Vadar?
