Shonda Rhimes’ pilot “Gilded Lillys” will be filmed in Boston next month

Grey’s Anatomy Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes will be in Boston next month to begin filming the TV pilot, Gilded Lillys.

The pilot is a departure for Rhimes, who is best known for the medical dramas Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, while Lilys is a romantic period drama about the opening of the first luxury hotel in New York City in 1895.

“This is a very exciting project for the Commonwealth,” said Lisa Strout of the Massachusetts Film Office. “Massachusetts is the perfect place to set a story from the Gilded Age, an impressive and well-preserved period in the Commonwealth’s history.”

Stout added that though the project is only a pilot, she has her “fingers crossed that the show gets picked up and chooses Massachusetts for the series.” She added there are “many projects currently considering Massachusetts for spring and summer starts.”

Though the there are no plans to shoot at the location, there is actually a B & B in Boston called Gilded Lily.

Blythe Danner, Sarah Bolger and Madeline Zima will star in the pilot.
