‘Veronica Mars’ at the ATX TV Fest

Today’s panel began with a show of hands. “How many people in this room donated to the Kickstarter?”

It was roughly 3/4 of the room. I knew then that the Veronica Mars discussion with writer/creator Rob Thomas and Chris “Piz” Lowell was going to be amazing.

Rob spoke about everything from the actual Kickstarter campaign, which he feared would fail miserably, to the film’s upcoming production. The amount raised was always going to impact the scope of the film, and Rob added that $2 million would have given us an “Agatha Christie murder in a drawing room” with “Veronica trying to solve it in one night.” I’d actually really like to see that, but since they surpassed that goal we were assured we’d see something “bigger” than the show and “pretty ambitious.” Rob was quick to remind us that it still wouldn’t be The Hunger Games in scope.

After 7 years of marination, the story came easily and Rob likened the experience to “putting on comfortable clothes.” Details are being held back, but we do know the film will pick up with Veronica in New York City after not having worked a case since what we saw in season 3. And even though there will be a concentrated effort to keep things simple for the Veronica virgins, the diehard fans can expect many an Easter egg.

Production on the Veronica Mars movie starts this week in L.A. Most of the cast is locked in, but has yet to be announced and Rob promised multiple backer updates over the next 2 weeks. Be on the look out!

During the panel it was also mentioned that the Party Down movie is still in the works and a script is being developed.

You can also catch Chris Lowell in the new series Enlisted. The pilot screened at ATXFest and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things.
