Three ‘Star Wars’ locations to visit while in Italy

starwarsitaly

The seven Star Wars films have been shot in some of the most beautiful locations around the world and, of those, the best are located in Italy. Here’s three to checkout on your next trip abroad.

Palace of Caserta, Italy

Italy’s Palace of Caserta played the Naboo Palace in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. The UNESCO World Heritage site also famously filled in as Vatican City in 2009’s Angels & Demons. In recent years the Palace, located just outside of Naples, has seen a decline in visitors and has reportedly started to fall into disrepair, but tourists are still welcome to tour the grounds most days.

Villa del Balbianello, Italy

Lake Como, Italy isn’t just known for its most famous resident, George Clooney. Star Wars fans also know it as the home of Villa del Balbianello, where Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala were married in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The Villa and surrounding gardens can be toured March through November.

Mount Etna, Italy

Mount Etna isn’t just Europe’s largest active volcano; it was also used as the digital background when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker fight on Mustafar in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The backdrop for the Star Wars scene was shot while Etna was erupting, but it’s much easier, and more practical, to visit the Italian mountain when it is quiet. Driving directions and tour information can be found on the Etna administrative headquarters’ website.
