The Goldstein House, or the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, is a home that has become very well-known in popular media and culture, due to its being used in many popular movies and music videos, besides hosting numerous fashion shoots and parties. It has been the inspiration for many creatives, and has achieved iconic status in the architecture as well as film communities, some calling it a celebrity in its own right.
Music videos shot here include Snoop Dogg’s “Let’s Get Blown” (2004) and Nelly’s “The Fix” (2015). It was featured in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003) as Alex’s smart and futuristic-looking new home.
However, it’s biggest claim to fame is its use as the abode of the loan-sharking porno kingpin Jackie Treehorn in The Big Lebowski (1998). In the scene when The Dude visits Jackie Treehorn, the house plays the role as Jackie’s ‘pad’ – you can see the iconic infinity pool and full-glass windows looking into the living room.
The home was designed and built between 1961 and 1963 by John Lautner, on being commissioned by Helen and Paul Sheats to build a home for themselves as well as their three children. However, when Goldstein purchased the home in 1972, it was not in the state it is in today.
Goldstein, being a bachelor who has never married or had children, aimed to truly make this house into a masterpiece that was ahead of its time. He worked with Lautner until his death in 1994, and with Duncan Nicholson who took over after, to remake the house exactly as Lautner would have wanted it, introducing technology that didn’t exist 30 years ago. The property next door, which incidentally also had a Lautner-designed property on it, was bought by Goldstein and torn down to expand the main residence by building a party house, a rooftop tennis court as well as an office. Goldstein even added a nightclub underneath the house, something that suited his lifestyle as a millionaire bachelor “NBA Superfan”.
The architect combined the lower-level study, studio and master bedroom into one large master bedroom divided by a concrete wall, and furnished with concrete furniture and an invisible sink. The master also has a built-in scale, as well as windows that look onto the pool – an infinity pool overlooking LA county. This was where Jennifer Lawrence was photographed for the cover of a 2014 issue of Vanity Fair magazine.
