Will the ‘Star Trek’ sequel be shot in Hawaii?

Star Trek 2 (which doesn’t have an official title yet) is on track to begin shooting on January 15, 2012, and it’s possible part of the movie may be filmed in Hawaii.

According to TrekMovie (via MTV) production designer Scott Chambliss and his team have already finished most of the design work and sets are being built now in Los Angeles. Some of the sets from the 2009 film (including the USS Enterprise) are also going to be reused in the new movie.

In addition to the studio sets, scenes will also be shot at a Los Angeles museum which will stand in for a “famous Star Trek location.”

It is also being reported that J.J. Abrams is considering making the movie’s locale into a “Jungle Planet” and using Hawaii (where he also shot the series Lost) for those scenes. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, Honolulu Film Commissioner Walea Constantinau and Hawaii Film Commissioner Georja Skinner were in Los Angeles last week to meet with Paramount executives about the Star Trek sequel.

The untitled Star Trek sequel will hit theaters in 3D on May 17th, 2013.
